Day 2: Rumble Fish

Rumble Fish - title card

I had never even heard of this film, as it came out the same year I was born, but holy shit that movie kicked ass!! I can’t believe the all star cast: Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Larry Fishburne, and of course Cage! And they were all so young, I barely recognized Diane Lane. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and the casting was a real family affair as he had his daughter Sophia playing Diane Lane’s little sister and his nephew Nicky Cage playing Smokey, one of Matt Dillon’s gang member buddies. Oh, and let’s not forget a cameo from Tom Waits as the billiards owner!

Rumble Fish is a straight up art house teen flick, it’s all filmed in black and white except for the stylistic moments of color to symbolize things, as expected. My only qualm: not enough Cage, yo! It is early in his career, so I get that he isn’t gonna score the leading role in this film, but as someone who is on a Nicholas Cage bender I was really looking forward to some stellar flip outs and Cage Rage moments. However, I was just tickled to see rough and tough, man’s man Mickey Rourke playing a pretty boy “gangster” who talks like the effeminate godfather. But for reals, I’m obsessed with Motorcycle Boy, that character indeed reigns.

I snapped a couple pics of Cage’s highlighted moments, my favorite being the lake house orgy where Cage is spotted biting a girl on the ass.

As far as my mental state goes now that I am three films in, I’m doing great! I’m actually loving this experience so far! I even had to stop myself from pressing ahead and doing a double feature, as I am trying to pace myself. 3 films down, 67 to go, Viva La Cage!!
Next up is Racing with the Moon!
