Day 8: Moonstruck

I want to start by saying Moonstruck is soooo fucking good!! Anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with Cher, and then add in some rom-com Cage and that is a cocktail I want to throw down the hatch! Especially after having just watched Raising Arizona minutes before, I was getting Cage wasted!

When I first started this journey into TWC my friend Gina Bling hit me up and said she absolutely wanted to be there when I watch Moonstruck, so I was thrilled to have another guest in the Cage with me. When she got to my place she explained that this is probably the most rewatched film in her household, and that it was going to be hard for her to not speak the dialogue along with the film and that she would try and hold back. I totally welcomed it, this is something I can get down with! I would be have been in the same boat had we been watching Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore.

The best part of having Gina Bling watch Moonstruck with me is that she comes from an Italian-American family, so she was able to break down for me how perfectly this movie nails all of the stereotypes on the head without making it cartoonish. For example, when Cher goes to tell her father she is engaged, her dad demands they go into the kitchen to deliver the news. Apparently that’s a very Italian thing, that everything important happens in the kitchen. She said that down to the Italian home decor and style of dress it’s identical to her own grandparents. I also learned to drop a sugar cube in champagne, apparently that’s a thing!

Young Cher is a total babe in this movie, and I’m gonna be honest, Cage is a real italian stallion!

G-228 Max (Russell Crowe) enjoys the company of his supposed long-lost cousin Christie Roberts (Abbie Cornish) in A GOOD YEAR.

You have to admit, he is a stud in these days, but especially in this movie. I said it once and I’ll say it again, hubba hubba!!

He’s so in his element in Moonstruck, being of the Coppola’s and all. Cage was nominated for a golden globe for this role, and Cher straight up won an Oscar! She beat out Meryl Streep, Holly Hunter, and Glen Close! Get. It. Gurl. I think we can all agree, I have reached the turning point in his career, the late 80s is when Cage stakes his claim on Hollywood and on our hearts. He has arrived!! Hallelujah!!

Moonstruck has a legit Cage flip out, better than the one in Birdy in my opinion:

CAGE FLIP OUT TALLY: 6

I am now two weeks and 10 movies in, and I am totally digging the journey still. I am starting to feel a little bit like I am having to juggle work and social engagements to get this done, but it’s manageable for the most part!! I should explain to those of you following along that last summer I somehow accidentally managed to watch all 10 seasons of friends in like 5 weeks, and I am pretty sure I killed half of my brain cells in the process. I didn’t go completely crazy, but I did do this to the favorites list on my iphone:

Those closest to me were worried that 70 Days in the Cage would have the same effect, but let’s be real, Cage films and the entirety of the fucking Friends series are like apples and oranges, right? We’ll see I guess! Either way, I’ll have to add Cage to my speed dial soon!

Onward to week #3, next up is Vampire’s Kiss!
