Day 35: Adaptation

Adaptation is in real life one of my favorite movies of all time, despite the fact that a man named Nicolas Cage is the star. It’s got the writer/director dream team with Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich is also a personal fav) .

Spike Jonze is just one of those directors that kills it every single time he makes something, his music video collection alone is so dope! These two are examples of my favorites, but you should really see all of them:

Fat Boy Slim – Weapon of Choice

It’s Oh So Quiet – Bjork

Also, did you know that Spike Jonze is married to Sophia Coppola? Cage’s cousin?? And the family business grows and grows!!!

Charlie Kaufman is a fucking genius. He writes a bunch of weirdo stuff that I totally dig. He’s the only writer that can make a comedy that is also depressing as hell but in a way that it isn’t too much for the brain to digest.

I really believe this is Cage’s best acting out of all of his movies so far. Not exaggerating. He plays two twin characters that look identical and you can see the difference between the two just by how he holds himself. He crushes this role, no one else could have pulled this off other than my main man Cage!! And he had to do most of the movie in a fat suit. Respect.

This movie was a shared favorite between me and my departed cousin Alex, we must have watched this movie a hundred times together and I could probably recite most of the script along with the movie. It was tempting to capture every single inside joke we had, but instead I narrowed it down to the two favorites:

These probably won’t make any sense to you as to why they were so funny to us, but I had to throw them in anyway as a shout to to Alex!

Lastly, there was one line of dialogue that we could not for the life of us figure out what the actor was saying. I watched it back over and over and over again to see if I could sound it out, but eventually we had to take to ye old google for answers. Here’s the clip:

What he’s saying is Deus ex machina. It’s a latin term meaning “machine of god”. The definition: an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel. So there ya go, don’t say I never taught you anything new on this site! Now you are justified in wasting your time reading my bullshit!

Next up is Matchstick Men!!!
