Day 34: Sonny

You guys!!! Here it is, Nicolas Cage’s directorial debut!!! Now I wasn’t planning on including movies where he just has a cameo (except of course for Fast Times at Ridgemont High) but since he directed this one we decided to give it a pass. And boy oh boy am I glad we did. This was some super weird shit!!

Just when I was starting to think that Cage is actually a pretty normal dude! Just when the smoke of Birdy, Vampire’s Kiss, and Deadfall started to clear, and things like Con Air, It Could Happen to You, and The Family Man take it’s place, then BAM!! Sonny happens and I’m reminded that, oh yeah, Cage is a crazy weird dude! And I do hope you realize that I mean that in the best way possible.

Brace yourselves for this plot, because it’s a doooozy: James Franco is playing a fucking GIGALO in the 80s in New Orleans! The movie would waver between moments of being boring as hell and moments that were so insane I didn’t know how to handle it. But the insanity far outweighed the boredom.

Here is a scene where Franco has an epic flip out, and I just wish so much that I could have been a fly on the wall watching Cage direct Franco on how to have a flip out! That would be my dream come true!!

And of course Cage has a cameo, and OF COURSE it’s a bonkers off the wall shit show! Look at this!! So awesomely nuts!

I could literally watch this on repeat forever, obviously spliced with my two other favorite Cage clips I’ve captured so far:

Next up is one of my favorites ever, Adaptation!
