Day 11: Fire Birds

Yes yes yes fuuuuuuck yes Fire Birds!!! This is what I’m talking about, real live Cage action!! Not that weird bullshit Time to Kill offered. Explosions, hand to hand combat, a consensual sex scene with the love interest, and Tommy Lee Jones playing the same role he has always played, only ever will play, and all I ever want him to play!! You keep doing you, Tommy Lee Jones, don’t ever change!!

Fire Birds got me fired up. It utilized my favorite action movie formula:

  1. “Young Hot Shot” has personal trauma that makes him want to put himself in harm’s way to help others
  2. “Young Hot Shot” enters the academy to learn to put himself in harm’s way and help others, but his ego gets in his way often
  3. “Old Timer Former hot shot” is the teacher at the academy, and he’s threatened/inspired by “Young Hot Shot” (see’s himself in him)
  4. “Young Hot Shot” needs to seek help from “Old Timer Former Hot Shot”… reluctantly
  5. “Young Hot Shot” and “Old Timer Former Hot Shot” are called into battle together
  6. “Old Timer Former Hot Shot” gets into a bind, “Young Hot Shot” pulls him out (the student becomes the teacher)
  7. “Old Timer Former Hot Shot” sacrifices himself for “Young Hot Shot”

You may have noticed that this is the exact same plot as Aston Kutcher/Kevin Kostner’s film The Guardian, or maybe you didn’t notice and I am just really deep into this…. Either way, I’m just tickled by the thought of the Cage to Kutcher comparison.

I felt so proud to be a patriotic member of the great red, white, and blue while watching Fire Birds. This movie was all about ‘murika! And I’ll be damned if some evil drug cartels in South American go and ruin the streets of my fine country, bringing their crack-cocaine into my backyard! Hell no, not on my watch!! There is only one way to take these animals down: send our best helicopter fighter pilots down there and blow those drug peddling cartels to smithereens!!!

I AM THE GREATEST!!!!

The movie starts with a quote from old man George Bush:

And then there’s a scene where Cage is watching the news and seeing how much our country is suffering from all of this crack, I had to pause and look closer, because this was amazing:

Me neither!!

In other Cage news: THIS article just came out on Vice.com yesterday!! It seems that I’m not alone is my quest. I’ve also found a few other blogs of people who have marathoned TWC!!

While others have completed the task, they did take their time doing it. No one is doing 5 films per week, so for that I need to give myself a good old pat on the back!! Or I need to get a hobby. Regardless, still loving Cage, still loving the movies, and I have to say that I agree with the woman from the Vice article, my respect for Cage as a character actor is only growing. I can’t believe I went into this thinking he wasn’t a good actor, he’s fucking amazing!

Next is Wild at Heart! I’m a David Lynch fan, looking forward to this one.
